Secularism and tolerance????
mmm....Was just explaining to my american colleagues the tenets of our constitution...and that set me wondering abt Religious tolerance...Dont you think that this is kinda off the mark?? Tolerance is something that u endure inspite of difficulties, atleast thats what the dictionaries say and here we are aaram se saying we are 'tolerant' of other religions....
Secularism is not abt tolerating other religions. Its coexisting with other religions...
Dont you think we need to change this to something more appropriate? More reflective?

Came here through RS's BLOG. Something to think about your post - How many countries have a policy of religious tolerance at least and let people of different religions live in peace together with minimal discrimination?

Dont expect too much yaar, it may or may not make sense atlast. :-)

I totally agree with you. Nowhere else in the world would you see a confluence of religions..
My post is not aimed at questioning the concept but the word we use. Maybe 'tolerance' seems the right word here. Somehow, I dont feel it conveys the essence....

Main Entry: tol·er·ance
Pronunciation: 'tä-l&-r&n(t)s, 'täl-r&n(t)s
Function: noun
1 : capacity to endure pain or hardship :
2 a : sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one's own b : the act of allowing something :
This is what is given as the meaning of the word tolerance in Merriam Webster. I believe we use tolerance in the second sense of the word - sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one's own . In this sense the word seems to be just right.

You are confusing between "To Tolerate" and Tolerance..Pls see below the exact meaning of tolerance.
Tolerance is a social, cultural and religious term applied to the collective and individual practice of not persecuting those who may believe, behave or act in ways of which one may not approve.
Dictionary meaning is "The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others."
